The Impact of UTAUT on Employees’ Intention towards Wearable Sensible Devices

The construction industry is acknowledged to be a high-risk sector which has gradually accepted technology for improving safety. There have been developments in the use of Wearable Safety Devices (WSDs) such as biometric sensors and location-tracking systems, for mitigating workplace hazards; however, their adoption has faced resistance due to several factors. The objective of this research is to establish on what basis workers intend to adopt WSDs when it comes to perceived performance expectancy (PPE), perceived effort expectancy (PEE) and social influence (SI). This is so even though they have the potential to reduce fatalities significantly, especially in the construction sector. Moreover, other reasons why there is little widespread acceptance are issues related to data privacy and ease of use. At the present time, it is not used widely enough in Pakistan like other countries. Therefore, this study tries to fill this gap by examining how environmental and psychological factors connect with safety perceptions and behaviour held by construction workers. The sample comprised 50 employees from three different construction firms in Pakistan, including workers, supervisors and managers. The sampling technique used to collect data was based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). It was found that behavioural intention to use WSDs was greatly influenced by PPE, PEE and SI.
